About the price increase
As you may have noticed, there has been a large increase in the price of shellac flakes. Shellac Shack has waited as long as we could to keep our prices at previous levels, but to stay in business we have finally had to raise ours.
The reason for the rise in price is from the source. The November lac crop (the raw material that is processed into shellac) was the second crop in a row that has been very poor. (The first crop was last April; there are 2 crops per year.) On both occasions the broodlac, the insects that are put on the trees that produce the resin(seedlac), have not had a good survival rate because of weather; thus have not produced a good crop of seedlac. In the last few years, there has been much research and effort to increase the viability of the broodlac, so hopefully this problem will be lessened in the future crops. See photo below
We think you will find that our prices are still less than our competitors. Our commitment to our customers is that as soon as the price of shellac flakes comes down, so will our prices.
In the meantime, you can be assured that our product is fresh and of high quality. We guarantee it.
Below is an example of the resin produced by the insects on the branch of a tree.
